This project included the construction of the sound barrier with interlocking concrete blocks near the A2 on the south side of Eindhoven, to make the Scouting Stratum site safe for children, young people and guides. The Scouting Stratum, located near the A2, at the Leenderheide junction, saw its expansive forest area slowly decrease when the highway was expanded. A new sound barrier made with Legioblocks provided a solution to ensure that scouting activities could safely continue without extreme noise pollution.

Rock structure with multifunctional uses

From a financial perspective, they used a standard construction product: the stackable interlocking concrete blocks by Legioblock. The concrete variant of the classic lego block forms the basis of the 200 metres long sound barrier. The concept for the eventual design combines a number of different functions and aspects.

The side facing the scouting consists of a continuous rock structure, in which each rock comes equipped with a screw hole. This can be used to install hooks, rings and bolts, which can be then be used for a number of scouting activities. In addition to its sound-resisting capacity, it also provides the members of Scouting Stratum with a range of other possible uses.

Combining functionality and aesthetics

On the motorway-facing side, it has a more dynamic appearance due to a structure of large scales. Each stone contains one scale, aligned to the driving direction of the adjoining parallel road. This creates a unique image that gives passing motorists a subtle hint: this is not just a regular sound barrier, but also combines functionality and aesthetics with some minimal tweaks.

Legioblock’s concrete interlocking blocks are ideal for the construction of sound barriers or motorways and industrial sites that cause a lot of noise pollution due to their excellent sound-resistant properties.
