Legioblocks for Europe’s biggest recycling centre

We have built a robust and reliable storage solution for one of the biggest recycling centres on the continent in the heart of the Ruhr region, one of the most iconic industrial areas in Europe. The Ruhr region, located in west Germany and encompassing cities such as Dortmund, Essen, and Duisburg, is a place where tradition and progress go hand in hand, and has symbolised industry, innovation, and economic strength for over a century.

Using Legioblocks, we built a stable and safe facility for the storage of electronic waste, such as refrigerators, in the heart of this vibrant and dynamic region. The storage facility is strategically located in an area where no less than 30,000 tons of valuable raw materials are processed every day. Thanks to the Legioblock storage solution, the recycling centre can operate efficiently and safely, while simultaneously making an important contribution to the circular economy and sustainable use of raw materials in Europe.

Heavy industry demands robust solutions

The Ruhr region is known not only for its industrial heritage, but also for its innovative approach to recycling and reuse. Our project in Lünen is located in a facility that processes approximately 30,000 tons of valuable raw materials annually, from plaster and wood to electronic waste, plastics, metals, and biofuels. The constant flow of trucks and cranes places high demands on any building structure.

The challenge was clear: to create a storage solution that could withstand intensive industrial activity effortlessly, while enabling quick and efficient construction at the same time, without disruption to daily operations. We achieved precisely that balance with our Legioblocks: robust, stable, and flexible enough to function in a busy industrial environment.

Storage depot for recycling centre completed quickly

The Legioblocks were put in place directly from the truck. No time-consuming foundation works, no waiting times for curing, but ready straight away. This meant minimal disruption to the busy recycling company and rapid completion of the new storage facility. Due to the heavy loads and intensive use of cranes on site, we integrated strategically placed support elements in close consultation with the client. These provide maximum structural stability under heavy loads and increase the safety margin during crane operations significantly. In addition, the modular Legioblock system offers the flexibility to adapt storage capacity later to meet changing needs. Expansion or adaptation can be achieved without major renovations.

Robust design for heavy industry

The selected blocks from our industrial series are over four metres in height and offer a large storage capacity ideal for white goods and electrical appliances in particular. Thanks to the integrated support systems, the walls can withstand heavy industrial loads easily and remain stable during crane activities on site.
All materials used comply with German building regulations and bear the CE mark, which guarantees the quality and safety expected in German industry.

Imminent expansion

The first phase has been completed successfully, but we are not done yet. The building permit for the roof installation has already been granted and installation will take place in the coming months. This demonstrates our client’s confidence in the Legioblock solution and the potential for further collaboration.

Circular economy in practice

This project symbolises the power of the circular economy. While the recycling centre gives huge quantities of valuable materials a second life, our Legioblocks contribute to sustainable construction. The blocks are made entirely from recycled materials, are fully demountable and reusable, and have a minimal CO2 footprint due to the quick, dry construction method without the use of chemical adhesives.

The Ruhr region, innovation and industry

Lünen is situated in the heart of the Ruhr region, traditionally the industrial centre of Germany and Europe. This region has developed from a coal mining hub into a modern, innovative industrial hub that revolves around sustainability and technology. The recycling centre in which our project is located processes materials from all over Europe, setting the standard for responsible waste processing. By using Legioblocks, the construction aligns perfectly with this philosophy of reuse and circular economy.
